Risk Management![]() Since 1996, Risk Management has worked with adolescents and their families who have long histories with the juvenile justice system. A major goal is to prevent these chronic and serious offenders from becoming another number in the Indiana Department of Correction. This is accomplished by teaching new skills and behaviors and connecting them to community resources and support. The program utilizes intensive supervision along with random weekly drug screening. There is a classroom and a follow-up phase that lasts a minimum of 44 weeks at our program / administrative center. This intensive program has seen many successful results; the staff has enjoyed witnessing these young people becoming productive members of our community. In certain cases, the Juvenile Court may suspend such a commitment pending successful completion of the Risk Management program. It is the agency's belief that many youngsters can be more effectively sanctioned while at the same time learning new skills and behaviors by relying more fully on the local community's support and by being more directly accountable to it. Phase I is 16 weeks long and some participants are placed on electronic monitoring and house arrest. Phase I is divided into six units and all behavioral, affective, experiential and academic learning for that particular unit is focused around one of six themes. Parents meet weekly during the course of Phase I. Phase II is a minimum of 28 weeks and the participants return to the program four times per week for several hours each visit; one of those visits involves parents. Phase II participants are connected to a support network composed of a cross-section of adults from the community. Participants must perform a number of other tasks and carry out certain activities to be released from Phase II. In addition to staff recommendations and Probation Department input, each participant must appear before a community board and make his/her case for reintegration into the community and school. |
Community Transition / Day Reporting Since 2006, Community Transition / Day Reporting has worked with adolescents and their families who need added supervision in a community setting or are returning from a placement outside of the community. The goal is to provide a community-based intervention that facilitates the success of at-risk youth in their community. We work with the adolescents and family to identify and utilize the strengths that they currently exhibit and empower them to make positive choices. We then help the adolescent and family to develop the tools that they need to make and implement positive choices. We encourage the clients to take accountability for their actions and to encourage the clients to complete their education. This will make them stronger and reduce their chances of returning to the criminal justice system. We aid the adolescent and their family in setting short and long term goals and in clarifying the steps necessary to becoming successful so that progress can be mapped. We also refer clients to appropriate agencies for further support and development. This is all completed while keeping the court advised of the progress being made to ensure a positive transition to independence. |
