Learning Place

Print Friendly Version
The Learning Place is a school-like day treatment program that provides academic and affective opportunities for students in grades 6 - 9 who have had significant difficulty adjusting to the behavioral requirements in their public school setting. That difficulty has often resulted in expulsion from school. Other times, a referral is made to the program in lieu of expulsion. A strict behavioral system is employed at the Learning Place.

Appropriate classroom behavior earns points that lead to movement through a series of four levels with commensurate responsibilities and privileges. The academic curriculum offers individualized work in the major subject areas. The affective program includes individual, group and family counseling. Community service and adventure or challenge experiences are an important part of the Learning Place as they are in other FYSB programs.

To assist students in making a successful transition back to the sending school, students meet for several days near the end of the summer to reinforce what they have learned. Bi-weekly meetings are scheduled for the first semester a student spends after returning to his/her school. The Learning Place operates on a school year schedule similar to area public schools.

When enrolled at Learning Place, students not only earn academic credit, but also learn behaviors and skills that allow them to return to public school and successfully complete their education. Students attend a maximum of 2 semesters before being transitioned back to their home schools. Over the history of the program over 80% of the students report finishing their high school career. FYSB has offered this award winning program since 1979.

Tutoring

The FYSB offers a number of tutoring opportunities as an adjuct to other agency programs as well as a stand-alone support for students who need additional academic work.
