Nurturing Program Fathering Program Parenting Classes
The Nurturing Program receives referrals from the office of Family and Children because of abuse or neglect allegations. This national program provides 16 sessions of parental education and support and is a major deterrent to future abuse. These families meet for 2 hours twice a week and practice their new skills the last half hour of each class. The Nurturing program is offered with child care available. Family reunification and abuse prevention are the goals for this program and one important step in the whole process of breaking the cycle of abuse. The Fathering Program is an education initiative that uses the "It's My Child Too" curriculum developed by Purdue Cooperative Extension Services. It is an 8 session program for court-referred non-custodial fathers to improve their relationships with their children. The 1.5 hour sessions help men become more responsible fathers, establish paternity if needed; often increase visitation is earned as a result. It is the first step in the process of fathers realizing their important role in the lives of their children. Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) Program for parents of children of all ages is regularly offered at FYSB. STEP classes are held 1 hour a week for a 6 week period and offers parents a realistic and practical approach to meeting the challenges of raising children today. Homework activities are expected and feedback from the participants is overwhelmingly positive.
