Opportunities to help Children

Service is the rent each of us pays for living - the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time or after you have reached your personal goals.

Volunteer Opportunities

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates): Speak up for an abused or neglected child!
A CASA is a volunteer, age 21 or over, who advocates for children who have been abused or neglected. A CASA volunteer investigates the circumstances surrounding a case, makes an independent evaluation of what is in the child's best interest, and works to achieve a safe and stable home for the child.

Email Claudia Clark at cclark@fysb.org for more information.

Mentor: Be there for a child who needs a friend!
A mentor is a volunteer, age 19 or over, who spends 1/2 hour per week during the school year with an at-risk middle school age student. The meetings take place at Portage schools while students are having lunch. The goal is to establish a one to one relationship in which both the mentor and "mentee" can share life experiences.

Email Ann Baas at abaas@fysb.org for more information.

A Place Where "All Kids Matter":
Have your business, organization, or religious institution become a place where "All Kids Matter". The business, organization or institution partners with the FYSB by having staff or members go through a short orientation program to learn new ways to support young people and to pledge their support of children and youth.

Email Ann Baas at abaas@fysb.org for more information.

Parent Educator:
Help teach parenting classes. Training and materials will be provided.

Email Karen Joppek at kjoppek@fysb.org for more information.

Babysitting:
Provide a respite for foster parents by babysitting foster children from age newborn to 12. Volunteers need to be 19 or over. Three or four adults will supervise a maximum of ten children. Volunteers can sign up for 1 to 4 weekly sessions per month.

Email Karen Joppek at kjoppek@fysb.org for more information.

Office Work:
Help with filing, data entry, copying, and various office tasks.

Email Cheri Hofferth at chofferth@fysb.org for more information.

Speakers Bureau:

Email Ann Baas at abaas@fysb.org for more information.
